Intro to typography

Eli Hendricks

Typography:

  • Legibility vs Readability
  • Expressive fonts / type for eye catching readability
  • clean serif/sans-serif fonts/type for smaller body copy
  • sans-serif fonts designed for screen viewing assist in readability.

   Serif vs Sans-serif:
  • Serif reads better in smaller text
  • sans-serif is best for headlines
Font Variance:
  • Lots of different fonts will confuse the reader
  • Don't use fonts that are similar (no point)
Readability:
  • Use upper and lower case letters for optimum clarity
  • UPPER CASE MAKES IT LOOK LIKE YOUR YELLING
Alignment:
  • Left alignment reads easiest
  • consider the fact that the eye flows down the page
Emphasis:
  • use tools your are given to make eyes flow easy
  • italics
  • bold
  • underline
  • color
  • typestyle change
Integrity:
  • avoid stretching or compressing
Kerning:
  • kerning is when you change the gap between letters
Large text blocks: Rags
  • strive for rhythmic rags
  • rags help create a smooth and easy to read text
Consistent spacing:
  • helps with texture
  • letters should flow well
